The World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2016 Kicks Off

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took part in the World Summit on the Information Society 2016, which was held in Geneva, Switzerland. A number of government Saudi agencies received certificates of excellence in recognition of their efforts and projects to implement the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society. For its treatment abroad project , the Ministry of Health won a Certificate of Excellence, while the Ministry of Education received a Certificate of Excellence for its your job and mission project, and King Saud University was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for the Digital Curriculum Development Initiative.

Dr. Khaled Manzlawi, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, stated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was eager to adopt international visions in this field, in line with its principles, values, and great interest in implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society. “This approach has been followed by the Kingdom since the inception of the summit”, Dr, Manzlawi stated.

On the other hand The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz received the ICTs in Sustainable Development Award from His Excellency the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Mr. Houlin Zhao. In recognition of the king’s outstanding contribution to the field.

Dr. Manzlawi stated that in order to promote the spread of broadband services throughout the Kingdom and make them available at high speeds, Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 was launched, which included the Kingdom's commitment to the development of digital infrastructure, particularly broadband, with the goal of reaching coverage of more than 90% of Saudi homes. The National Committee for the Information Society, in collaboration with the e-Government Program (Yesser) of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, and the Communications and Information Technology Commission, organized two workshops during the forum on the Kingdom's efforts and achievements in transition to the information society. The WSIS Prize has 18 branches, and this year more than 300 projects from around the world competed for it, with over 1,500 participants, including 85 ministers and 250 high-ranking officials. The Kingdom has received a total of seven United Nations prizes for WSIS projects since 2012, as well as three certificates of excellence for its work in the field of information society.​
