WSIS Forum concludes, and Saudi Arabia continues to win a number of awards

​The WSIS Forum 2016, which was hosted in Geneva, Switzerland, came to an end on Friday, May 6, 2016. The Attaa Digital Program, which represented by the Kingdom, received an award in the e-business category. A number of government agencies also received certificates of excellence in honor of their work and projects to realize the WSIS vision. The Ministry of Health received a Certificate of Excellence for its treatment abroad project, the Ministry of Education received a Certificate of Excellence for your job and mission, and King Saud University received a Certificate of Excellence for its Digital Curriculum Development Initiative. With this year's triumph, the Kingdom will have received a total of seven United Nations prizes for WSIS projects since 2012, as well as three certificates for excellence for its efforts in the information society. The conference was sponsored by the National Committee for the Information Society, and His Excellency the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its assistance in putting the summit's results into action. He also complimented the Kingdom on its sixth consecutive year of winning the Summit Awards. In this context, His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz bin Salem Al-Ruwais, Chairman of the National Committee for the Information Society and Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, congratulated the award winners and stated that the Kingdom places a high priority on implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society, and that the Kingdom has made significant progress.

Mr. President, Dr. Khaled Manzalawi, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, delivered a speech in which he stated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was eager to adopt international visions in this field, in line with its constants, values, and great interest in implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society. He went on to say that, in recognition of the Kingdom's efforts in this area, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, received the ICT Award for Sustainable Development from His Excellency the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Mr. Houlin Zhao, at the beginning of this year. Dr. Manzlawi noted that the (Saudi Arabia Vision 2030) was established in order to encourage the expansion of broadband services throughout the Kingdom and make them available at high speeds, with the goal of attaining coverage of more than 90% of households in highly populated areas by encouraging investment in broadband and forging new collaborations with the corporate sector, and by 66 percent in other regions. During the forum's work, the National Committee for the Information Society organized workshops on the Kingdom's efforts and achievements in transitioning to the information age, in collaboration between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, represented by the e-Government Program (Yesser), the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, and the Communications and Information Technology Commission.
